Shop Specials: Hammer Finished Apokatana and Deuce, Modified D’Capitan
We’ve been in an experimental mood around the shop lately. We’ve been playing with new bevel grinds, trying new processes, and even drinking new beers.
In our last production run we thought we’d see what the Apokatana and Deuce looked like with a hammer-textured finish like that on the Backwoods Bone Machete, rather than our spattered acid etch finish. We like the results.
The blade profile and balance on these blades are very similar to our smooth finished blades, but with slightly more beef in the spine, and slightly more length (about an inch), due to the extra hammering. If anyone is interested in owning these unique pieces, they’re for sale to the first email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). They’re going for the regular price of $329.95 for the Apokatana and $349.95 for the Deuce.
We also have a slightly modified D’Capitan. The modification is a 3 inch shortening of the handguard due to an accident while shaping the handle. We’re knocking down the price to $275.
UPDATE 8-9-11: All blades are sold. Thanks for the feedback and the support!

Love 'em, but in an apocalyptic world, will these swords stand up to sword-to-sword, life-or-death combat with a pyschotic murderer?

hey guys there gorgeous but where is that hellion i keep hearing about i want to see that little beauty? haha

@Lance: These guys seem to know their stuff. They use a great steel, and I'd be willing to bet they are well heat-treated. I'm sure they would stand up to other blades very well. That said, no sword is indestructible, no matter how well made it may be. If you've got one of their blades, though, and the skills (and luck) to boot, you would be pretty well off.
@ZT: These look great, guys! I definitely prefer the hammered finish on the apokatana over the acid etched finish. The D'Capitan looks pretty nice with that modified guard too, albeit done by accident.

Love the look of your blades...
Problem: You guys have no track record! There are many swordsmen that would love to see what your gear will do in live test!! (before they buy!)
Cold Steel does live demos for most of their product.. Please.. Please.. Show the worth of your labor and post strenght and meat cutting demos to youtube!!

Cheers Brian, I just wanted to know if these blades would stand up to repeated Luke Skywalker style blade-on-blade smashing, day after day. I'm not worried about the blade breaking, its the steel pins bolting it to the handle.

Hey all. We just posted a destructive test video of our Deuce blade. Check it out: http://zombietools.net/post/new_video_destroying_the_deuce/
From our experience with this test and others, we're thinking our blades would hold up pretty well in sword on sword combat. And Lance, the peened steel pins in the handle are really the least concern. We have screwed up handles while making blades before and tried to remove them. It took us a half hour with powertools to get the slabs off and had to nearly destroy them. The blade would probably fail long before the handle did.
We'll have to put the handles through some punishment with our next video (probably a destructive test with the Apokatana) to demonstrate.

I just picked up my hammered finished Deuce. The note I received with it says this is the first hammered finished one. Other than the above prototype I suppose. I asked for my Deuce to have a straight spine like the original and the guys at Zombie Tools obliged. I am VERY IMPRESSED! It looks fantastic. Just enough heft, robust and nicely balanced. Did I mention it looks absolutely bad-ass cool? Well worth the price! Kudos for the fine work to all at Zombie Tools.

I agree with above I ONLY want the rough hammered finish. Please make it available on all blades.

Could you possibly post side-by-side pix of those weapons that have both of the different finishes? While I tend to like the appearance of the hammered, a comparison would be nice to make sure I get the weapon I want with the finish I feel looks the best.

So you guys being swordsmiths can you tell me something? I know that mall bought katanas are shit (I know my set is), but if I brought the steel from them to a real blademaker, could they fashion me a battle ready sword out of it?

im a professional mma fighter and i like yalls stuff i was thinking yall should make tactical armor to run through the zombies like some bad ass gauntlets to box the bastards up and some bad ass boots to stomp through them shin gaurds so you can throw some bad ass muay thai kick that kill elbow gaurds to cut they asses up knee gaurds to knee thier face in and a bad ass helmet with guard on the vital spots its just and idea but i think that would be the shit

Hey I was wondering if you guys could maybe bring some of the old blades out of retirement? The Harvester was pretty damn cool and I'm thinking about buying one
On 1-30-12, Matt said....
Yeah I was wondering if you guys could bring back the harvester as well. I didn't know about you guys until last summer and by that time the harvester wasn't being made anymore. I would love to have the blade but a shorter overall length, I'd say about 36 inches over all, with a 26 inch blade and a 10 inch handle. Yeah that would be awesome. . . Just saying. Keep it up gentleman, you guys make amazing blades.
